Updates

Thanks to all who participated in our Weekday Meeting.  Brandi Timm gave us some really good tips on getting our home storage in order. Below are some recipes she had for us to try.

CREAM OF BEAN SOUP

INGREDIENTS
1 1 T. Butter
1/4 Onion finely chopped
3 C. Refried beans (hydrated)
3 C. Water
1 Evaporated milk can
3 Bacon Strips chopped and cooked
1/2 C. Sour cream
1/2 C. Fresh cheese
Tortilla Chips

PREPARATION

In a medium pot saute' the onion in butter, add the beans, water, bacon and evaporated milk bring to a boil at a medium low heat, stir constantly to avoid sticking.  Serve in a bowl, making a spider web with the sour cream, sprinkle some fresh cheese and tortilla chips on the side.

TIPS

This soup will taste better with homemade tortilla chips.
Make the sour cream runny by adding some milk to it.
To make the spider web, make a small, medium and large circle in your bowl of soup and with a knife pull from the center to the sides.
My mom drops spaghetti noodles with the beans and cooks the soup until the noodles are cooked.

CAKE WITH BEANS

INGREDIENTS

1 pkg. Cake mix
Eggs
Water
1 C. Dehydrated refried beans

PREPARATION

In a large bowl add the cake mix, the required eggs and water according to the instructions on the cake mix omit the oil and add a cup of dehydrated refried beans and bake according to the instructions on the cake mix.

TIPS

Adding beans to your cake mix adds 14 g. of protein, 8 g. of fiber, vitamin C, calcium and iron; and also cuts down on the fats.
Try using cake mixes that are dark to avoid seeing pieces of beans on a light cake.
Use it on your own reicpe, substituting it for the oil or butter.
Beans give the cake a little bit of creamier texture.
Blend the beans to avoid seeing chunks of beans in your cake.
You can also add beans to your cookie recipe, blend them.  Do NOT substitute for any ingredient.

Lesson Recap

Sister Cherie Seward gave an excellent lesson based off of Elder L. Tom Perry's conference address titled "Becoming Goodly Parents".  There was plenty of good advice and wisdom for all of us.

Lesson Recap

Heather Olsen gave a great lesson on being a life long learner.  Each of us has different ways that we learn best and we should embrace our way of learning and enjoy the journey.  Lorenzo Snow was a life long learner and was always trying to learn new things.

Don't Forget!

Remember our weekday meetings have changed to the 4th Thursday of each month.  This months meeting will be Thursday, January 24th at 7:00 p.m.   We promise it will be a great way to spend a Thursday evening!

Happy Birthday!

Goals

Fun Fact:

If you set 1 goal for the new year, you have an 80% chance of accomplishing it.   If you set 2 or more goals the percentage drops to less than 30% of accomplishing them.

SO---SET 1 GREAT GOAL, then set another one.

Lesson Updates

Lorenzo Snow:
He was a life long learner, and he taught that we should "exert ourselves" so we can advance in the principles of truth and increase in heavenly knowledge.   Each last week should be the best that we have ever experienced, that is, we should advance ourselves a little every day, in knowledge and wisdom and in the ability to accomplish good.

Sister Updates

New Year Preparedness Goals

The New Year is a time of making resolutions and goals for the year to come and leaving any regrets behind you.  As you are thinking of what goals you would like to accomplish in the coming year, along with the usual goals, make a goal to get your food storage and to prepare for emergencies.

Now is the time to make the goal to be prepared.  In breaking down your preparedness goals, you first need to determine exactly what you want to accomplish.  If you plan to set aside a little money each week or month to go towards your family's preparedness, you will be surprised what you can afford.

To start, you could plan a budget for buying emergency supplies that deal with water.  Water is the first item recommended to store because it is the most crucial item to have available during an emergency.  It is recommended to have both portable and stationary water sources.  You could also plan out a budget to buy a really good portable water filter or purifier.  There are also different types of prepackaged water you can purchase, such as water in pouches or foil-lined cardboard filled with water.  These small containers are excellent for small children.

Another step to reach your preparedness goal is to set up a schedule of certain things you want to buy each month.  You may want to be pepared by having 72-hour kits for everyone in your family.  Perhaps you want a total preparedness package consisting of 72-hour kits and a year's supply of food storage for each member of your family.

One month you could buy emergency preparedness items that deal with warmth, such as emergency blankets, sleeping bags, hand and body warmers, and wool blankets.  Another month you could focus on purchasing items like matches or a flashlight.  This may seem like a lot of items to buy, but purchasing them in stages will help ease the stress of your pocketbook.  And so it goes.  When you are planning your New Year's resolutions, think about setting a goal of food storage and preparing for emergencies.  If you make a plan and budget, it will be easier to get the things that you need without added stress and worry.  Now is the time to get prepared.  You can do it!

February 13th - Mark your calendar for our visiting teaching interviews 4:30 - 6 and 6:30 - 8:30.

Visiting Teaching

We don't need a formal mission call to share the gospel.  Others whose lives will be blessed by the gospel surround us, and as we prepare ourselves, the Lord will use us.  Visiting teachers can embrace their spiritual responsibilities and help "bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man"  (Moses 1:39).

Happy Birthday!
