Lesson Recap - "Is Not This the FAst That I Have Chosen?" by President Henry B. Eyring

"When we offer succor to anyone the Savior feels it as if we reach out to succor Him." But, when we look around us as see all the people who need help it can be very overwhelming at times. We might ask ourselves what can I do, I am just one person. "So the Lord has given us something that we each can do. It is a commandment so simple that a child can understand it. It is a commandment with a wonderful promise for those in need and for us. it is the law of the fast."
When we give fast offerings the funds are first used in our ward to help with the needs of those in our ward. From there the surplus goes to the Stake. If there is a surplus in the Stake it goes to Salt Lake and it can be used to help someone anywhere in the world where there is a need.
It is wonderful that we can help others, but just like every commandment the Lord gives us we are blessed ourselves when we are obedient. President Spencer W. Kimball wrote, "Rich blessings are made by the Lord to those who fast and assist the needy.
. . . Inspiration and spiritual guidance will come with righteousness and closeness to our Heavenly Father." We all want that inspiration and spiritual guidance to help us navigate this world we live, and to feel close to our Heavenly Father. As we pay a generous fast offering we will be blessed as we succor those in need.

Thank You

Thank you to all those who helped make our Weekday meeting a success. All the bread was yummy! Here are the recipes we got to taste test.

French Bread (Rayanne Cook)

 Mix:

1 T. Salt                       2 ½ C. Hot Water                               3 C. Flour (White or Wheat)
3 T. Sugar                    ½ C. Oil                                              2 T. Yeast

Add:  2-3 C. Flour (White)

In a large bowl dissolve in hot water the salt and sugar. Add oil. Mix in 3 cups flour and yeast.

Add 2-3 Cups more flour until dough is slightly sticky. Raise for 1 hr. stirring every 10 minutes.

Roll out and then roll back up (like when you make cinnamon rolls). Place on greased cookie sheet and let raise 30 minutes. (Makes 2 loaves.) Bake 400° for 25-30 minutes.

Note is using bread pans: After raising place in greased pans and let raise for 30 minutes. Makes 2 loafs. For 4 loaves use 1 ½ batch. I use this to make cinnamon rolls, rolls, bread, and French bread.

*You ca add 1/3 cup lemon juice if doing 1 ½ batch size when you add the hot water. This helps the bread not to be so crumbly.

Bread Sticks (Annalyn Jensen)

1 ½ Sup of Warm Water
1 Tbls. Yeast
2 Tbls. Sugar
Combine these and let it set for 10 min or until your yeast is activated. Then add:
1 ½ tsp salt
3 cups flour

Combine and knead. Let it raise until doubles in size. Roll out, cut in to slices. Roll the slices in melted butter then sprinkle with parmesan and garlic powder. Bake at 357° for 15- 20 min.

Desert Bread Sticks (Brandi Timm)

Use Rhodes Rolls. Thaw then roll into a snake. Fold in half and twist. Place on cookie sheet per dough instructions and cook. Melt butter, add a cinnamon and sugar mixture like you would use for snicker doodle cookies. Brush this on the top of the breadsticks after they are cooked. Drizzle with cream cheese.

Carmel Coffee Pull Aparts (Judy Hendrix)

24 Rhodes frozen rolls
½ pkg Butterscotch pudding (regular or instant)
½ tsp cinnamon
1 stick of butter melted
½ cup brown sugar

Grease tube pan. Dip rolls in butter then coat with the mixture made with the pudding, cinnamon and brown sugar. Drizzle remaining mixture over the rolls. Cover with towel and put in cold oven overnight. Bake next morning for 32-40 minutes at 350°. Do not preheat the oven. When done, invert pan onto plate immediately when taking from the over.

Breads, Rolls, and Sweet Breads Sweet Dough

(Judy Hendrix from Tressa White)

Soak 2 Tbls of dry yeast in ½ cup lukewarm water for 5 minutes without stirring.

Mix together:  1 ½ cups lukewarm milk
                        1/2 cup sugar
                        2 tsp salt
Stir well and add yeast  mixture
Stir in:             2 eggs
                        ½ cup soft shortening

Mix in 5 cups of flour first with spoon, then with hand. Add this flour in two additions using the amount necessary to make it easy to handle.  When the dough begins to leave the sides of the bowl, turn it out onto a lightly floured board to knead. Knead using 1 more cup of flour until its smooth, elastic, and doesn’t stick to the board.

Place in greased bowl, turning once to bring greased side up. Cover with damp cloth or put in Tupperware with lid., but do not seal completely, and let rise until double about 1 ½ -2 hrs. Punch down let rise again until almost double 30- 45 min. then use to make your rolls, cinnamon rolls, or pull aparts etc.

Batter Bread(Christine Lundquist – Betty Crocker Cookbook)

3 cups all-pourpose flour                                 1 Tbl sugar
1 tsp salt                                                          1 pkg regular or fast-acting dry yeast (2 ¼ tsp)
1 ¼ cups very warm water                  2 Tbl. shortening or softened butter

Grease bottom and sides of 8x4 or 9x5 loaf pan with shortening or cooking spray.
In a large bowl mix 2 cups of the flour, the sugar, salt, and yeast. Add warm water and shortening. Beat with electric mixer on low speed 1 in scraping bowl frequently. Beat on medium speed 1 min, scraping bowl frequently. Stir in remaining 1 cup flour until smooth.
Spread batter evenly in pan. Round top of loaf pan by patting with floured hands. Cover loosely with plastic wrap lightly sprayed with cooking spray; let rise in warm place about 40 minutes or until dough has doubled in size.
Heat oven to 357 , Bake 40-45 min or until load sounds hollow when tapped. Immediately remove from pan to cooling rack. Brush top of loaf with melted butter. Makes 1 loaf

Lesson Recap

Chapter 12 - Seek the Spirit in All You Do

President Benson said that "the most important thing in our lives is the Spirit." He told a conference of new mission presidents, " . . . the Spirit is the most important single element in this work. With the Spirit and magnifying your call, you can do miracles for the Lord in the mission field. Without the Spirit you will never succeed regardless of your talent and ability." It is the same for us. We need the Spirit in our lives to help us navigate this crazy world we live in.
The Holy Ghost can help us in every aspect of our lives if we will live worthy of His presence and heed His promptings. Ask for the Spirit to be with you every day as you say your morning prayers, read the scriptures each day to invite his presence. Once you have done your part listen and act on the promptings you are given. You might try writing down the ways you have seen the Spirit manifest in your life at the end of the day. I think you will be very surprised how much He is helping us each day.

Youth Conference

The youth had Youth Conference this last weekend. They traveled to Manti to see the Manti Pageant. Along the way they stopped at temple square and were able to tour the conference Center, the visitor center, and the Beehive House. On Saturday they went on a hike before heading home. Here are a few pictures. Thanks to all the leaders who took time out of their busy schedules to take the youth!

Lesson Recap

Chapter 11- Follow the Living Prophet
We need to keep our eye on the prophet. We need to listen to his words and follow his council. Each prophet/president "has been uniquely selected for the time and situation which the world and Church need". " If we want to know how well we stand with the Lord then let us ask ourselves how well we stand with His mortal captain- how close do our lives harmonize with the Lord's anointed- the living Prophet- President of the Church, and with the Quorum of the First Presidency."
"The prophet tells us what we need to know, not always what we want to know . .  .  . How we respond to the words of a living prophet when he tells us what we need to know, but rather not hear, is a test of our faithfulness . . . "
We have the comfort of knowing that the prophet of the Lord will never lead us astray. If we will keep our eyes on the prophet, listening and then heading his council we will be able to survive this world and the storms of life.
What has President Monson told us recently?

Relief Society Lesson Recap

Pablo Picasso said, "you can complain because roses have thorns, or you can rejoice because thorns have roses. Our Father in Heaven wants us to be happy. 2 Nephi 2:25 says Adam fell that men might be and men are that they might have joy." Joseph Smith taught, "Happiness is the object and design of our existence . . ."
We can be happy and find the good in every day of our lives. President James E. Faust said, "Although men are that they might have joy, this does not mean that our lives will be filled only with joy, for it must needs be that there is an opposition in all things. Happiness is not given to us in a package that we can just open up and consume. Nobody is ever happy 24 hours a day. seven days a week. Rather than thinking in terms of a day we perhaps need to snatch happiness in little pieces learning to recognize the elements of happiness and then treasuring them while they last." So what are the elements of happiness? Nephi gives us a bit of a road map in 2 Nephi chapter 5. I encourage you to study this chapter and look for the elements that led Nephi to say that he and his people "lived after the manner of happiness."
(If you need some clues look up a the article "Living after the Manner of Happiness" by Elder Marlin K. Jensen).
Sisters we can be happy even in the middle of trails and tribulations. We have our Savior's words to help us find happiness as he said, "Be of good cheer, I have overcome the world." No matter the circumstances we find ourselves in we have the gospel and the knowledge of our Heavenly Father's plan of happiness. We must look for the little compensatory blessings, for they are there, which bring us happiness and joy. We must rejoice that the thorns have roses!

Presidency Message

Dear Sisters,

We have had a lot happen in our ward recently and you have responded with love, enthusiasm, and open arms for which I am so very thankful. Continue to do this. Look out for the sisters you visiting teach as well as your neighbors, be they member or nonmember. We are here to be the Lord’s hands and do His work. It is amazing to me how I am blessed more when I serve others than I feel that I ever bless their lives.
Be open to the Spirit and listen to the promptings you are given. Most of the time these promptings are very subtle, and if we are not in tune we will miss them and miss out on our chance to minister to others.
All through the scriptures, there are examples of Christ ministering to others. One of my favorite scripture stories in the Book of Mormon is when the Nephite children are blessed individually by Christ. Each child was important just as each sister we visit is important. Take time to minister to your sisters individually. Remember they are not just a number and it isn’t race. They each have fears, sorrows and joys. Get to know them, and as you do you will come to love them and be able to minister to them better.  Remember visiting teaching or any service is not about you it is about others; their needs and their desires. Be respectful of their wishes even though you may want to do things differently than what they want.
Thank you again my dear sisters for all that you do. I am so blessed to be in a position where I hear of all the good that you do. You truly are amazing women and I am so glad to be able to associate with you and get to know you better.

                                       Love,
                                  Sister Cook

Lesson Recap

It was a 5th Sunday so the Priesthood and Relief Society met together this time the youth were also included. Our lesson came from some training given to the General Authorities and Auxiliary Leaders at Conference time. The topic was Strengthening Faith in Our Heavenly Father and the Lord Jesus Christ Through Sabbath Day Observance. Here are some thoughts from this. Think and ponder on them. They might be a topic of conversation in our homes to help our families.

* Do we understand that the Sacrament helps with out happiness?

*Do we honestly remember that we are bearing our testimony to
our Father in Heaven that we will remember our Savior and all he
has done for us each time we take the Sacrament?

*Do we realize that the sacrament is the only ordinance we repeat
for ourselves? And we repeat it on a weekly basis.

*Do we prepare ourselves before we come to Sacrament meeting.
Do we get to Sacrament Meeting before the meeting starts and sit
reverently instead of visiting with others so we can be prepared
spiritually to partake of the Sacrament?

The Sacrament is a time to help us remember our Savior and his atoning sacrifice for us. Let us take advantage of this wonderful blessing. As we do our faith will increase,, our testimonies of our Savior will increase, and we will become stronger in the gospel of Jesus Christ.
