June Preparedness Thought

Do you have have your 72 hour kits ready?

Good question. If you answered yes, congratulations to you,
if you answered no, make that this months challenge.
Get your 72 hour kit ready.
With all the tornado's in the mid-west it gives us the thought provoking
question; "am I ready for something like that"?  We need to get ready
and be prepared. More likely than not someday something will happen here
and we won't just be watching about it on the T.V. Get ready now while there
is a sense of calm before any storm might come.

Ideas for your kits:
*have them be portable, you might have to carry your supplies with you
backpacks are great, then even younger children can carry their own (you
never know if you'll be separated from other family members)
*Water Water Water  (a life necessity)  purification method might be
a good idea also so you don't have to pack all your water with you
*Food  - easy food with no cooking required and full of protein
*documents
*change of clothes - if you  don't want to part with anything in your wardrobe, check thrift stores
you can find clothes you can buy for cheap that won't bother you if they get ruined
*money  make sure you pack small bills, like $5 and $1 dollar bills that way if you purchase an
item and you are unable to get change you wont loose alot of money
*whistle - you might need to make noise
*matches
*source of light - remember if your light source requires batteries, you need a spare
*toiletries - just the bare necessities, no one will care if you have makeup on or not
*portable radio - so you can listen to red cross updates
*medications - if you can pack spare, if not remember to grab it

Everyones kits will be different, based on need. you can add to this list with anything else you feel you might need, just remember, you might have to carry it. This kit is just to keep you alive for three
days not living in luxury.

Lesson Recap

Sister Lee taught us about grace.  Her talk was based on a devotional talk given by Brad Wilcox titled "My Grace is Sufficient".  We learned that Grace doesn't come at the end of our lives, it is an enabling power that assists us now.  The Savior not only makes up the difference--He IS the difference.  He wants us to come as we are and he will help us on our way back to our Heavenly Father.  If anyone would like to view the actual talk, click the link below.

Presidency Message

"Even with the trials of life, because of the Savior's Atonement and His grace, righteous living will be rewarded with personal peace."  Elder Quentin L. Cook

As I listened to General conference last month, Elder Cook's message about Peace really struck me.  the way he presented this idea gave it a new meaning in my life.  I know this is certainly a time where we would all be happy to have more peace, whether it be in the world in general or in our own homes.  Life has become so hectic and bombarded by the ways of the world, that peace is becoming an ever more important goal to strive for in our lives.

Elder Cook went on to say:  "The peace to which I am referring is not juse a temporary tranquility.  It is an abiding deep happiness and spritiual contentment."  What an amazing blessing!  I believe this to be one of the greatest rewards of the gospel.  In times when we are struggling and in need of comfort, the Savior's atonement can compensate for all the unfairness and struggles that we face and bring us peace.

"His peace will ease our suffering, bind up our broken hearts, blot out our hates, engender in our breasts a love of fellow men that will suffice our souls with calm and happiness."  Heber J. Grant

It is my hope for each one of us to have the opportunity of feeling the true peace and happiness that the Gospel of Jesus Christ can bring into our life.  Whether you are striving to feel this for the first time, or have felt it in the past, I encourage all of you to rely on the Lord and know that His atonement has the infinite power to bring you true peace, no matter what you may be facing this very moment in life.   He loves you.        Sister Lee

Preparedness

Preparedness Thought For May
The Prophet said to plant a garden, so that' what we'll do.
For God has given rich brown soil, the rain and sunshine too.
And if we plant the seeds just right and tend them carefully,
Before we know, good things will grow to feed our family.”

From  Provident Living Website:

Growing a Garden

“Self-reliance is a product of our work and undergirds all other welfare practices. It is an essential element in our spiritual as well as our temporal well-being.”
—Thomas S. Monson, “Guiding Principles of Personal and Family Welfare,
Liahona, Feb. 1987, 5
Planting a garden, even a small one, allows for a greater degree of self-reliance. With the right information and a little practice, individuals and entire families can enjoy the many benefits of planting and tending a garden.
The following information is provided to help you prepare your garden.

Planning a Garden

As you begin to plan and prepare for a garden, here are a few general reminders:
Vegetables need at least six hours of sunlight a day.
The garden site should be relatively level. If there is a steep slope, run rows of plants across it to prevent erosion.
It is a good idea to spade (mix) the soil to a depth of 12 to 14 inches. Adding organic matter such as manure, peat moss, or leaves will benefit the soil.
Be careful with fertilizer. All fertilizers have a three-digit code. For vegetable gardens, look for 8-8-8 or 16-16-16.
The simplest way to eliminate plant pests is to remove insects, worms, or eggs by hand. Some shake-on powder or liquid bug sprays are relatively safe to use.
Proper depth for planting seeds is approximately four times as deep as the seed is thick.

Gardening in Containers

If you don’t have a traditional garden plot, you can plant vegetables and herbs in containers that fit on driveways, balconies, roofs, and even window sills. This activity can be interesting and rewarding for adults and children alike. The following resources provide useful information about gardening in containers.

Its also a good idea to buy extra seeds for storage so you will have them on hand if the need arises. I challenge everyone to plant a garden this year, big or small, plant what your situation will allow; but lets listen to the prophets council to plant a garden.

Sister Updates

Congratulations to Kirk and Pam Dooley, new grandparents. Shantae had twin girls. Both Mom and Babies are doing well.

Lesson Recap

The lesson was on counting our blessing from President Monson. Take some time to do as he suggests, and write down our blessings, large and small.

Cannery

The dry pack cannery is concerned that it is going to close down. It will only stay open if the church sees a need, and is being active  used. Right now there isn't enough activity.  If you need any food storage items, call them and purchase them.  Spread the word and see if we can keep this open.

Emergency Planning

It is important that you and your family know the emergency plan for our ward if something happens on Sunday while we are attending church. If there is an emergency, then the buzzer that sounds during sunday school will go off. If it is a steady sound, stay in the building. With the 11am meeting schedule, you will go to  the primary room. If you hear alternating sounds, then you evacuate the building heading to the west parking lot. STEADY-STAY, ALTERNATE-EVACUATE. Take time in a family home evening this month to go over this with your families.

Happy Birthday!
