Sister Update

Here is an update on Sister Dorothy Barker who recently moved from our ward.

You may be interested to hear an update on me.

My left leg has been hurting quite a bit  to walk.   This is the same leg on which I broke my hip last March 2013 when I fell going to the post office in Shelley, Idaho..  It hurt enough so  that I decided to go see a doctor.   I made an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon in case the hip was affected.   He took a new X-ray to see what was going on.   I had never been to see this doctor before  but  liked him.

The X-ray indicated that I had a fracture in the femur of that leg.  The bone above the knee.

I was 100 % shocked and not at all happy to hear what was said.   I was so grateful my sister, Annette, took me and was there to hear the diagnosis.  She is so very kind to me. I love her a lot.

I have not fallen or done anything at all that would warrant a broken bone.  I was told to not put much pressure on that leg when I walked but to put my weight on the walker.

Because of the above,  I called the facility where I live and asked them to deliver my meals. This was done so I would not need to walk down to the main building to eat which is what I have been doing since I moved here. I am so grateful they were willing to do so.  It’s been good exercise for me.

I have an appointment with the doctor on February 6th.   He will take another x-ray to see if it is healing well.   I hope the report is good.

The weather here has been cold.  Not much moisture has fallen recently.  Let us pray February and March are different.

My e-mail address is   utkansas@hotmail.com      I would love to hear from any of you.

Recipes

There was wonderful food served at Sarah's Shower and some recipes were requested.  Here are the two recipes for the cookies that were served from Lorraine Stewart.

Soft Oatmeal Cookies

Boil 2 cups raisins in 2 cups water until tender.  Cool and set aside.

2 C sugar
1 C shortening
2 eggs
2 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. nutmeg
½ tsp. cloves
½ tsp. allspice
1 ½ tsp. salt
2 C oatmeal (old fashioned or quick)
4 ¼ C flour
1 ½ tsp. soda dissolved in 1 C water drained from raisins (any remaining liquid not used)
½ C applesauce
1 pkg. chocolate chips

Cream shortening and sugar; add eggs.  Sift flour and spices.  Add dry ingredients alternately with liquid from raisins with soda dissolved in it.  Add applesauce.  Dredge raisins with a little flour and add along with chocolate chips.  Cookies will hold rounded shape better if batter is refrigerated for a while.  Drop by spoonfuls onto a greased cookie sheet and bake at 375° for about 15 minutes.  This is an old recipe from my grandmother, and they are not as flavorful if you leave out the raisins and just add chocolate chips.

Gingersnaps
¾ C shortening, margarine or butter (I use butter)
1 C sugar
¼ C Grandma’s molasses
1 egg
½ tsp. salt
3 tsp. soda
2 C flour
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. ginger
1 tsp. cloves

Cream together butter, sugar, molasses and egg.  Add soda, salt, spices and flour.  Shape dough into balls; roll in granulated sugar.  (Dough is sticky; add a little more flour if it cannot be handled.)  Place on ungreased cookie sheet.  Flatten ball with fingers and sprinkle with a little more sugar.

Bake at 350° for 8-9 minutes.  Let stand for a couple of minutes before removing from pan to a cooling rack.

Leson Recap

Sister Nicole Couch gave a wonderful lesson on a
talk given by President Dieter F. Uchtdorf

                   You Can Do It Now!

As long as we are willing to rise up again and continue
on the path.....we can learn something from failure
and become better and happier.

We know this mortal life is a test. But because our Heavenly
Father answers. He has given us the map that allows us to navigate
the uncertain terrain and unexpected trials that each of us
encounters. The words of the prophets are part of this map.
When we stray ---when we fall or depart from the way of our
Heavenly Father---the words of the prophets tell us to rise up
and get back on track.

Every person young and old has had his own experience with
falling. Falling is what we mortals do. But as long as we are
willing to rise up again and continue on the path toward the
spiritual goals God has given us, we can learn something from
failure and become better and happier as a result. My dear friends
There will be times when you think you cannot continue on. Trust
the Savior and His love. With faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and the
power and hope of the restored gospel, you will be able to walk
tall and continue on. You are stronger than you realize. You are
more capable than you can imagine. YOU CAN DO IT NOW!
Of this I testify in the sacred name of our Master and Redeemer,
Jesus Christ, amen.

Happy Birthday!

Lesson Recap

Sister Ilene Campbell gave an inspiring lesson on

Our Savior Jesus Christ

From the Life of Joseph Fielding Smith

" Let it be uppermost in your minds, now
and at all times, that Jesus is the Christ, the
Son of the living God who came into the world
to lay down his life that we might live. That is
the truth, and is fundamental. Upon that our
faith is built".

The Savior has revealed Himself in this dis-
pensation, and each of us can have an abiding
testimony of Him. We all should pattern our
lives after the life of Jesus Christ. The greatest
example ever set for men was that of the Son of
God himself. His life was perfect.

When you have a problem and need to make a choice,
make it by asking yourself "What would Jesus do"?

I pray that we may all walk in his footsteps and keep
his commandments so that we my be like him.
This is my desire. I hope it is yours..

OUR FATHER IN HEAVEN

From the life of Joseph Fielding Smith

"It is my desire to remind you of the nature and kind of being that God is,so that you may worship Him in spirit and in truth and thereby gain all of his blessings of His Gospel."

Sister Heather Olson gave an inspiring lesson on Knowing how we can obtain this knowledge. Beginning with Joseph Smith's FirstVision, the true knowledge of God has been restored in our day.
To exercise faith in God and worship Him, we must have an understanding of His characteristics.  God is a personal being and Father of our spirits, He loves us and is interested in each of us.
He weeps over His disobedient children. But has provided the way of redemptionso we can be brought back to His presence.

Relief Society lesson January 5, 2014

Sister LaDawn Bolander gave a very inspiring lesson today on how we can and should be prepared for the coming of our Savior.
1. By being obedient to the covenants we have made
2. Following the Council given to us
3. Strive a little harder to over come our weaknesses
4.Help one another
We watched a short video about the 10 virgins, how 5 were prepared to meet the Savior coming, their lamps were filled with oil. The other 5, put off preparing for Him. Therefore they were not accepted when they knocked on the door to be let in.

May we all strive to be a little better each day, lift one another up.
In the teachings of Joseph Smith: He says "We must be merciful to one another.  May we all strive to be Prepared...

Presidency Message

I hope that you all had a wonderful Christmas, that was filled with friends, family and mostly with the love that the Savior has.  I have had some heavy heart days since thanksgiving.  My firend passed away very unexpectedly, and then with Gloria going so quickly.  when I found our that Vanetta had passed away on Thanksgiving morning, I was in shock.  she was a pretty healthy person, and 3 years younger than me.  I went to her funeral and found out so many other things that she did great besides the things I knew of.  If you attended the Museum of Idaho in the month of December, and didn't have to pay, it was because of her.  Her business pays for that for the community to enjoy.  Anyway as I sat at the funeral, I realized that she was ready to go.  I leaned to a friend I sat by and said, "I wish I could start all over and be awesome."  So this year sisters lets all be awesome!  No one is allowed to pass away, there has been to much of that, but lets be more forgiving of each others mistakes, and just love each other more.  Lets all be GREAT visiting teachers.  One time visiting with Gloria I said, "looks like your second coming is coming quicker than mine."  "Yes it is", Gloria said.  We never know sisters, when our second coming will be, and we all need to be ready.  I wish you could all know the love I feel for you.  Happy New Year!
Sister Strupp

Visiting Teaching Message

The Divine Mission of Jesus Christ:  Exemplar

As we understand that Jesus Christ is our example in all things, we can increase our desire to follow Him.  The scriptures are full of encouragement for us to follow in Christ's footsteps.  To the Nephites, Christ said, "For the works which ye have seen me do that shall ye also do" (3 Nephi 27:21).  To Thomas, Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life:  no man cometh unto the Father, but by me" (John 14:6).

Today our leaders remind us to set the Savior as our example.  Linda K. Burton, Relief Society general President, said, "When each of us had the doctrine of the Atonement written deep in our hearts, then we will begin to become the kind of people the Lord wants us to be."

President Thomas S. Monson said, "Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, is our Exemplar and our strength."

Let us resolve to draw near to Jesus Christ, to obey His commandments, and to strive to return to our Heavenly Father.

Stake Trek

January 14th at 7:30 p.m. at the Stake Center will be a Stake Trek Kickoff Fireside.  This is for all youth 14 and up (by the date June 14, 2014), and their parents and anyone involved in Trek.  Sunday Dress.

Food Drive

The Shelley 1st Ward is going to have a food drive on the 18th of January at 9:00 a.m.  We will be bringing flyers around the week of the food drive to remind everyone.

Announcements

Thanks to everyone who helped with the funeral for our dear beloved Sister Gloria.  She served faithfully in her calling as compassionate service co-chairman.  She was also a very faithful visiting teacher.  She will be missed greatly.

Sisters, this year we are going to do something a bit different.  We would like to make a personal visit to each sister but this year it won't be in your birthday month.  Kitty will call and arrange those visits.  Thank you for making yourself available to us.  We love to visit you in your home.

Relief society weekday meeting will be January 16th at 7:00 p.m.  Sister Joy Price will be sharing with us the New Family Search program for 2014.  This is a great way to start out 2014.

Please look ahead sisters and save the 22th of February for a Relief Society special stake activity from 9-3p.m.  This will be our weekday meeting for February.

On Saturday, January 25th at 11 - 12:30 p.m., there will be  a shower for Sara Albertson.  Sara lives in the trailer court and is expecting her 2nd baby and first girl.  There are some concerns so right after they will go directly to primary children's hospital.  If you could schedule some time and come that would be wonderful and a great opportunity to get to know Sara.  The shower will be given by some friends, Cherie, Lorraine, Kitty and Kim.

January 23rd will be the first family history help night.  They will be in the rooms across from the library as the internet seems to be strongest there.  They can help you with any of your questions and needs concerning family history.
