January Preparedness Thought

January Preparedness thought:

“The Man who is prepared has his battle half fought”
                   Miguel de Cervantes

“By failing to prepare you are preparing to fail”
                   Benjamin Franklin

This is the start of a new year. Lets make this a year of preparing. First things first though, you cant prepare if you don't have a plan.  January’s  preparedness
challenge is to go through the emergency items you may already have, your first aid kits, your food, anything you have for an event of an emergency. Make a list of what you have, them make a list of what you need still and want to have included in your preparedness supply. Then take that list and prioritize it, what you feel is most important. Everyone’s will be different as everyone’s needs are different. Once prioritized make a goal to get some of the items on your list throughout the year. Maybe you give yourself 20 dollars a month for just preparedness supplies, or when you buy gifts you buy some preparedness items to give as gifts, Everyone’s financial obligations are different so make this something you and your family can handle, make it a goal you can be successful at. You can't get it all at once, it takes time and effort to prepare and  the most important thing to remember is putting forth effort to prepare is better than not preparing at all. So this month, make a plan and then put your plan into action and watch how your families preparedness supply grows through out the year.

Lesson Recap

Sister Bolander presented the Message today by asking sisters, Janice Fitzgerald, Lisa Dye, Christa Ball and Janet Evans to share an experience when they were either blessed by being a Visiting Teacher or were blessed by the service they were able to render as a Visiting Teacher.  We were uplifted by their experiences.  Bishop Bolander concluded the meeting with his vision, goals, and message for the Relief Society, Visiting Teachers in particular.

"The Power, Joy, and Love of Covenant Keeping"
She invited each of us to evaluate how much we love the Savior using
as a measure how joyfully we keep our covenants.
Why make and keep Covenants?
1. Covenant keeping strengthens, empowers, and protects.
2. Keeping covenants is essential for true happiness.
3. Keeping our covenant demonstrates our love for the
Savior and our Father in Heaven.

Lesson Recap

RELIEF SOCIETY LESSON

Sister Lorraine Stewart Gave a wonderful Lesson on "Reflections on the Mission of Jesus Christ"
We are all dependent upon Jesus Christ upon His coming into the world to open the way whereby we might secure peace, happiness, and exaltation.
Jesus Christ came into the world to do the will of the Father and open the way for us all to have this peace.
He has visited the earth in the latter days revealing heavenly truths for our salvation.
The Savior will come again, and we should prepare ourselves for His coming.
The Savior said when He was upon the earth, regarding the story of the ten virgins, that five of whom were wise, and took oil in their lamps, and when the Bridegroom came, there was only one half prepared to go out to meet Him. (Mathew 25: 1-13, D&C 45: 56-59) Do not let it be so with us as Latter Day Saints.
Let us try to be true to the everlasting covenants we have made and be true to God.

Sister Update

Sister Gloria Russell passed away Sunday evening around 9:30 p.m.  Please remember her family in your prayers.  She will be greatly missed!  We will update on funeral times.

Quote

In the "Spirit of Christmas", this is a great quote by Russell Ballard...

"In your morning prayer each new day, ask Heavenly Father to guide you to recognize an opportunity to serve one of His precious children.  Then go throughout the day with your heart full of faith and love, looking for someone to help.  Stay focused, just like the honeybees focus on the flowers from which to gather nectar and pollen.  If you do this, your spiritual sensitivities will be enlarged and you will discover opportunities to serve that you never before realized were possible."

Happy Birthday!

"THE PROPHET JOSEPH SMITH"

From the life of Lorenzo Snow

Lorenzo snow was associated with the Prophet through
various circumstances and had private interviews with him. Through this, he witnessed what a friend he was to the
saints and was the Prophet of the Restoration.

When Joseph Smith received his divine calling, he was
a pure, sincere, honest young man..

Throughout his life, the Prophet Joseph maintained his
honesty and high moral character..

Free from Hypocrisy, Joseph Smith could participate in
innocent amusement as well as teach with the power of
God.

Strengthened by the Holy Ghost, Joseph Smith increased in
spiritual power and influence. Joseph Smith , the great prophet
was not an educated man when God chose him and made
known to him his mission.

Each of us can gain a testimony that Joseph Smith was a prophet
and that the gospel was restored through him...

Visiting Teaching Message

THE DIVINE MISSION OF JESUS CHRIST:  THE ONLY BEGOTTEN SON

Our Savior, Jesus Christ, is called the Only Begotten Son because He is the only person on earth to be born of a mortal mother and an immortal Father.  He inherited divine powers from God, His Father.  From His mother, Mary, He inherited mortality and was subject to hunger, thrist, fatigue, pain, and death.

Because Jesus Christ is the Only Begotten of the Father, He was able to lay down His life and take it up again.  The scriptures teach that "Through the atonement of Christ, "  we "obtain a resurrection" (Jacob 4:11).  We also learn that all "might be raised in immortality unto eternal life" if we "would believe" (D&C 29:43).

As we come to understand more fully what it means for Jesus to be the Only Begotten Son of the Father, our faith in Christ will increase.  Elder D. Todd Christofferson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles said, "Faith in Jesus Christ is the conviction and assurance of (1) His status as the Only Begotten Son of God, (2) His infinite Atonement, and (3) His literal Resurrection." Modern prophets have testified:  "Jesus Christ was...the Only Begotten Son in the flesh, the Redeemer of the world."

Presidency Message

This is the wondrous and true story of Christmas.  The birth of Jesus in Bethlehem of Judea is the preface.  The three-year ministry of the Master is prologue.  The magnificent substance of the story is His sacrifice, the totally selfless act of dying in pain on the cross of Calvary to atone for the sins of all of us.
The epilogue is the miracle of the Resurrection, bringing the assurance that “as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive” (1 Cor. 15:22).
There would be no Christmas if there had not been Easter.  The babe Jesus of Bethlehem would be but another baby without the redeeming Christ of Gethsemane and Calvary, and the triumphant fact of the Resurrection.
I believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Eternal, Living God. His is the greatest that has ever walked the earth.  He is the Savior and the Redeemer of the world.  I believe in Him.
For each of you may this be a merry Christmas.  But more importantly, I wish for each of you a time, perhaps only an hour, spent in silent meditation and quiet reflection on the wonder and the majesty of this, the Son of God.  Our joy at this season is because He came into the world.  The peace that comes from Him, His infinite love which each of us may feel, and an overwhelming sense of gratitude for that which He freely gave us at so great a cost to Himself – these are of the true essence of Christmas.
Sister Jane Smith

Lesson Recap

MERRY CHRISTMAS sisters! Each of you received a gift from the presidency on friday, with an invitation to:
Search as did the wise men, Ponder as did Mary, and Praying as did the Savior.
I testify to you that this invitation comes from your Heavenly Father.
For those of you who weren't able to attend the lesson Sunday, here are some ideas to implement this invitation.
First: read Matt 2:11-12, search for ways you can come into his house, fall down, worship Him, open treasures, and present gifts.
The Wise Men exemplify the journey each of us takes as we seek the Lord.  They remind us that as we draw closer to Him, we will be led to continue our journey another way. BE WISE; SEARCH
Ponder as did Mary: Mary reminds us that we need to find a moment to ponder the events of that sacred night in Bethlehem.  In that moment we celebrate the miracle of Christ's birth, and the gift that Heaven gave. Luke 2:19
Praying as did the Savior: In the scriptures we looked at we found and made a list of things Jesus prayed for.  They included: over food, missionary work, the non-member, in our families, against Satan and evil, unity, to be purified, pray for understanding, ponder on things of God, prepare to receive more revelation. He always recognized his Father and prayed that we would trust Father that He would answer your prayers, and that we could feel the love Father has for us. He prays prayers of gratitude and thanksgiving. He prays in the temple, He taught us how to address our Father as the supreme creator of Heaven and Earth, Ask for forgiveness, forgive others, realize all gifts from God are good gifts. These are a few of the things Christ prayed for. You can search in the Scriptures for these and other examples.
May you each journey another way and find time to SEARCH, PONDER AND PRAY, it will be the KEY to a new heart this Christmas.

Preparedness

Preparedness thought for December

How many of you ever struggle year to year trying to buy the perfect gift for some of you family or friends? Most of the time we end up giving or receiving gifts that just take up more space and are not really very useful (another tie) or something we end up taking back (have you seen the after Christmas returns lines at the stores, yuck).  Sound familiar? Well I have a challenge for you this Christmas. Instead of doing the same old thing this year give the gift of preparedness. There are many things you can find for others that would help them be prepared for an emergency, and what a gift that would be. Helping our loved be ready for uncertainty, or emergency's that could arise in the future. It could be big or small, there are many things that families need  to be prepared. If you need ideas just Google 72 hour kits and see the list of items one person would need, or Google emergency preparedness. You can't go wrong with a gift of preparedness. Merry Christmas.

Happy Birthday!

Visiting Teaching Message

VISITING TEACHING MESSAGE

"THE WINDOWS OF HEAVEN"
                   by
        Elder David A. Bednar

As we live the law of tithing, we often
receive significant but subtle blessings
that are not always what we expect
and easily can be overlooked. For example
a subtle and significant blessing we re-
ceive is the spiritual gift of gratitude that
enables our appreciation for what we have
to constrain desires for what we want. A
grateful person is rich in contentment.
An ungrateful person suffers in poverty
of endless discontentment.
The honest payment of tithing is much
more than a duty; it is an important step
in the process of personal sanctification.

lesson recap

Sister Irene Campbell gave a wonderful lesson on "Doing good to others" by President Lorenzo Snow

Cultivate a spirit of Charity, be ready to do for others more than you would expect from them if circumstances
were reversed'.

We are children of the same Heavenly Father and have been sent into the world to do good to one another.

To love the Lord our God, with all our might, mind, and strength, and our neighbor as ourself (Mathew 22:37-40)

To do unto others as we would have others do unto us. We are happier when we sacrifice for the good of others, we get Heaven within us.

President Searle's Invitation

There are currently six full-time missionaries serving in the Shelley Stake.  This number is the most full-time missionaries serving in Shelley than any other time since the church has been restored.  This is certainly a direct result of efforts to hasten the work--particularly here in Shelley.  We hope that as members of the Stake we are excited about the opportunity we have to work with these faithful full-time missionaries.  Therefore, we invite you to become an instrument in the hand of the Lord by helping these missionaries accomplish more effective teaching opportunities.

This month, the Pocatello Idaho's baptism goal in 125.  Consequently, this is our goal too and we invite all to assist in obtaining this goal.  As a means to support this effort, we invite each member capable of fasting to participate in a special stake fast on November 17, 2013 to aid us in hastening His work.  During this fast, we invite you to pray and ponder about specific friends and neighbors who the Lord is preparing to hear and accept the truths of His gospel.  Then we ask that you listen and act on the promptings you will receive as a result of this effort, particularly on who you might invite to listen to the full-time missionaries.

Thank you for your goodness.  We look forward to working together to accomplish His great work.

Presidency Message

An Attitude of Gratitude

Several years ago, a dear friend, gave me a "Gratitude Journal".  The idea was to daily list 5 things I was grateful for.  As I took this challenge, I began to recognize the simple beauties--a robin in the apple tree outside my window heralding spring, the joy in my career as a mother as well as the things like the gospel and my membership in the Church.  I had an experience similar to that described in an article in the September 2013 Ensign.  (1,000 Things to be Thankful For, page 58).

In a conference talk (Ensigh, November 2008, pg. 42), Elder Bednar relates an experience in which his wife was asked to  "express only appreciation for blessings received and ask for nothing" and testified to the power of thankfulness.

"And he who receiveth all things with thankfulness shall be made glorious; and the things of this earth shall be added unto him, even an hundred fold, yea, more" (D&C 78:19) and in Alma 34:38 we are told to "live in thanksgiving daily".

May we all have an attitude of gratitude and come before the Lord with thanksgiving and make a joyful noise unto the Lord in appreciation for those blessings (Psalms 95:2).

Sister LaDawn Bolander

Lesson Recaps

Sister Cherie Seward gave a wonderful lesson by President Monson on "Obedience Brings Blessings".  A knowledge of truth and the answers to our greatest questions come to us as we are obedient to the commandments of God.  What a glorious promise!  He that keepeth Gods commandments receiveth truth and light, until he is glorified in truth and knoweth all things...

Sister Heather Olsen gave a wonderful lesson Sunday.   In view of the facts, it becomes us as intelligent beings, to realize that this life closes in a few days, then comes the life which is eternal. Love God more than the world. If we...fail to keep the covenants we have made, namely, rouse our time, talent and ability for the upbuilding of the kingdom of God upon the earth, how can we reasonably expect to come forth in the morning of the first resurrection?

Sister Updates

November Preparedness Thought

Preparedness thought for November

November is a month that we always seem to have thankfulness and gratitude on our minds. With that as a thought this month look at your preparedness in a  little different way. We are so blessed, and even when we seem to struggle with  life’s many bumps we are still so blessed. I was just reading the other day about people in another country who live in mud huts, I thought,  I can never complain, it can always be worse,  and then my daughter pointed out mom there is worse than mud huts too, it could be a cardboard box. Wow what a thought. It could be worse. How much we have to be grateful for. In our attitude of being grateful, let us share willingly with those around us who have it worse. We prepare have and have a stock, not just for ourselves, but to give assistance to others when the time calls for it. The are many ways to do this, give generously in our Fast Offerings, donate to the food bank, we just had scouting for food that is a good way to help others, the humanitarian center, and just by seeing a need and helping to fill it. We have so much, let us share of our blessing and preparedness and bless others lives as well is my challenge for this month.

PIE

It's time to donate to the community food bank "PIE" fund.  We need to gather all donations by November 24th.  We are the only ward that provides the pies for the community Thanksgiving baskets given out by the food bank.  We would appreciate your donation.  Please give to a member of the Relief Society Presidency or on your donation slip in the "other" column write "pie donation".

As a personal note, my children and I were asked by the Relief Society one year to deliver the pies to the Food Bank.  You would not believe the gratitude of these good brothers and sisters, who work so hard at the Food Bank, for these pies.  They couldn't thank us enough.  The floor was lined with boxes with the makings for a thanksgiving dinner in each of them--all for people in our area who cannot provide this for themselves.  It touched our hearts.  We can be the Lord's hands in this simple gift.
