From the Cannery

Sisters, the final cannery schedule for May is under the cannery tab at the top of the blog.  Below is the letter that came with it.

Brothers and Sisters,

You will find attached the final Family Canning activity for the Idaho Falls ID Cannery, which will be for the most of the month of May.   Due to our Welfare Assignments, part of the month of May will be used for Welfare Canning for those stakes that have specific assignments. Even though the official closing date for the cannery is June 30th, we have been asked to stop production by the end of May, so equipment can be dismantled and moved to other canneries that will need some of the equipment that is at our facility.

To make it fair for all concerned we will start taking names by phone on April 2nd, starting at 8:00am to 4:00pm. We will not accept e-mail orders. To be fair, we would also ask that one phone call not be for multiple peoples orders. We recognize that this may present some challenges for everyone, but in an effort to be as fair and equal as we can, this will be the process we will follow. You can use 2 phone numbers: 529-2201 & 529-1678.

Please review the attached schedule carefully as there are some things that we are doing differently for this last round of family canning.

We have been very blessed to have had the cannery here for as long as we have had it, and additionally to have been able to do as much family canning as we have been able to do.  It has been a tremendous blessing. I would encourage each of us to continue our individual and family self-reliance by following the Prophet’s council to get a 3 month supply of food we are accustomed to eating by “purchasing an additional can each time we go to the store” and over a period of time will have our 3 month supply.  We should then focus on getting a financial and water reserve and then focus on long term storage items that will last 20-30 years.

May the Lord bless each of us as we strive to follow the Lord’s Prophet and be obedient and faithful. It has truly been a blessing to serve each of you as you have come and participated in this sacred work.  Please know that we love you and pray for the Lord’s choicest blessing to be upon you.

Sincerely,

Charlie Olsen

Cannery Update

Brothers and Sisters,

During our recent Family Canning of the meat products that took place at the beginning of the month of March, there were a number of you that were not able to take the finished product home with you on the days that you worked due to the mandatory 10 day hold required by the USDA.  If you have not yet picked up your product and paid for it, please do so by the end of this next week (March 30th).  On April 2nd we will  make available for purchase, to those who come in and work during April, any of these meat products left over.

I will send out the May Family Canning schedule, which will be our last family canning activity, next Wednesday, and we will start taking names on April 2ND.

Make the Most of General Conference

Write a list of questions, concerns, or problems you want spiritual direction on.  Be specific and list anything.

Pray about the items on your list.  Ask specifically to find answers in conference.

Listen for answers.  Many times direct answers will come in a talk.  Other times they may come as you listen to the music or prayers.  Be open to the spirit.

Don't Forget!

Wednesday, March 28th at 6:30 p.m. at the church is our annual Blue & Gold/Scout Banquet.  This evening is for the whole family to come and enjoy a dinner together whether you have a Scout or not.  Each Cub Scout needs to bring a cake that they helped make to serve for dessert.  For those who wish to stay, there will be a pack meeting/court of honor after the dinner.  This has been a fun evening in the past so please come and bring your family!

Remember to keep going on your 40 day challenge!

March 31st & April 1st are General Conference.

April 8th is Easter Sunday as well as our Fast Sunday.

Lesson Recap

Julie Hogue did a last minute fill in as our teacher on Sunday and did a terrific job.  The lesson was titled "The Holy Priesthood --for the Blessing of God's children.

President George Albert Smith asked the question during a conference talk, "Do our sons understand the importance of the priesthood and what an important blessing this is."  What can we do to help them prepare to have the Priesthood.  Family Home Evening is a good place to start and also talks in Sacrament Meeting.

Jesus Christ restored divine authority to the earth.  Then came the apostasy.  Joseph Smith was given the Priesthood in our day by men who held it anciently.  Peter, James, and John conferred the Priesthood upon Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdrey.

All men who are worthy may hold the Priesthood.  It is a precious gift.  The power and authority of God can be found only in His true church.

The question was asked, "What does the Priesthood mean to you personally?  How does it help you develop?"

Priesthood ordinances are essential for us to enter the Celestial Kingdom..  We must be worthy to have them.

Important Reminder!

Our Relief Society Weekday Meeting will be the Relief Society Birthday Dinner this Thursday, March 15th at 7:00 p.m.  Please remember to invite the sisters that you Visit Teach to come.  It will be a great evening.

Happy Birthday!

Special Quote

I loved this quote that Sister Bolander gave in her testimony today.
"Trials make us thirsty enough to drink deeply of the Living Water".

President's Message

As the prophet travels across the world he is often asked by priesthood leaders what is the greatest challenge facing the church today?  "Our major challenge for the membership of the church is to live in the world without being of the world.  I would like to emphasize that in this day in which we live, the flood waters of immorality, irresponsibility, and dishonesty lap at the very moorings of our individual lives."  Granted this was from 1984, and the challenges we face today as a church might be of even greater concern, but it caused me to reflect on worldliness.  How do we keep from getting caught up in the fashion, fad and evil of the world that looks so interesting and inviting?  May I suggest that we turn our eyes, hearts, thoughts and prayers to the home and family?  I loved the visiting teaching message for February reminding us that we are the keepers of the hearth.  IF a mother's heart is full of the world, she will instill that into the hearts of the children, and if her heart is pure that will melt into the child's heart.  I was listening to a BYU TV commentary on the scripture and a quote struck me--"you cannot keep your covenants and have everything go wrong for long, and you cannot forsake your covenants and have everything go right for long."  Mothers be a mother that loves being a mother, a wife, and forsake the world.  Sister Kim Strupp

40 Day Challenge

Beginning February 29th we started a 40 day challenge to draw closer to Christ and strengthen our testimony of Him. It is entitled "Daughters in the Kingdom" and it includes a daily scripture and thought for you to read and ponder. We will conclude with a special lesson in Relief Society on Easter Sunday, and are trying to arrange for all Relief Society Sisters and Young Women of the ward to be able to attend.

If you are still needing the daily schedule It's NOT to late to Start! You can follow the link below, or contact Sunni Lee for a paper copy.

This is a great opportunity and we hope you will all join us!

Strawberry Cake

This dessert was served at the Young Women's New Beginnings and there were several requests for the recipe.  It is divine.

Mix white cake mix according to directions and bake in 9x13 pan or we bake ours in a sheet cake pan.  Cool  Blend 8 oz. cream cheese (softened) with 2 c. powdered sugar (use mixer).  Fold in 1/2 pt. cool whip.  Spread mixure on cake & refridgerate.

Drain 2 pkg. frozen strawberries.  Mix juice from berries & water to make 1 3/4 c. liquid and use to make Danish Dessert.  Mix as directed for pie filling.  Cool slightly.  Add the strawberries (we cut ours up) and spread over cream cheese mixture.  Chill and serve.

Note:  If cake is put in sheet cake pan, keep cream cheese mixture the same but double Danish Dessert.
I have also seen this done with frozen raspberries.
