Lesson Recap

This week's lesson was on the talk given by Elder Kevin W, Pearson entitled Stay by the Tree.  He says," Enduring to the end is a hallmark of true discipleship and is essential to eternal life...Enduring to the end requires total commitment to the Savior and to our covenants."  Elder Pearson  gives us six important principles that help us endure to the end:
1. Don't forget to pray- ask Heavenly Father what more would He have you do?
2. Come Unto Christ and be perfected in Him.
3. Press Forward with faith- Obedience builds faith in Christ. Faith is a principle of action and power. Consistently following the Savior's example produces spiritual power and capacity.
4. The Book of Mormon is key to spiritual survival- search the Book of Mormon and the words of the living prophets every day, every day, every day!
5. Don't be distracted and deceived!
6. Stay by the Tree-"Lehi's message is to stay by the tree.  We stay because we are converted unto the Lord. True disciples...awaken unto God each day in meaningful personal prayer, earnest scripture study, personal obedience, and selfless service."
"Brothers and sisters, enduring to the end is the great test of discipleship.  Our daily discipleship will determine our eternal destiny.  Awaken unto God, cling to truth, keep your sacred temple covenants, and stay by the tree!

Lesson Recap

Lesson # 16 The Eldery in the Church

"The Lord knows and loves the elderly among his people. It has always been so, and upon them He has bestowed many of His greatest responsibiliteies, In various dispensations He has guided HIs people through prophets who were in thier advancing years. He has needed the wisdom and expereince of age, the inspired direction from those with long years of proven faithfulness to His gospel."
Just because someone is elderly does not mean that they have done everything and can quit or take it easy. The Lord needs the elderly and there is much they can do. President Benson gives eight areas where we can make the most of our senior years.
1. Work in the temple and attend often.
2. Collect and write family histories, sometimes you are the
only resource left available for the memeories and
     information you have.
3. Become involved in missionary service. "What an example     and blessing it is to a family's posterity when
grandparents serve missions. Most senior couples who
go are strengthened and revitalized by missionary service.
Through this holy avenue of service, many are sanctified
and feel the joy of bringing others to the knowledge of the
fulness of the gospel of Jesus Christ . . . ."
4. Provide leadership by building family togetherness.
5. Accept and fulfill Chruch callings.
6. Plan for your financial future. "As you move thorugh life
towards retirement and the decades which follow, we
invite all of our senior members to plan frugally for the
     years following full-time employment."
7. Render Christlike service.
8.Stay physically fit, healthy, and active.

Lesson Recap

Lesson # 15 - The Sacred Callings of Fathers and Mothers
Our callings as mothers and fathers are eternal callings. Other callings come and go but those are callings from which we will never be released.
"Fathers, you have a sacred responsibility to provide spiritual leadership in your family.  . . .Fatherhood is leadership, the most important kind of leadership." What are some ways you can give spiritual leadership in your homes. President Benson gave 10 ways.
   1. Give Father's blessings, baptize and confirm your
children and ordain your sons to the priesthood.
   2. Personally direct family prayer, family scripture reading
        and weekly family home evenings
   3. Attend church meetings together
   4. spend one on one time with you children

   7. Teach you children to work
   8. Encourage good music, art and literature in your home
   9. Regularly attend the temple with your wife.
   10. Have your children see your joy and satisfaction in
          service in the church.
Mothers are the "heart and soul of the family." "Mothers are to conceive, to bear, to nourish, to love, and to train. Spending time with your children is the greatest gift you could ever give your children. President Benson gave ten specific ways that mothers may spend effective time with their children.
   1. Be at the crossroads when your children are either
coming or going such as when they come home from
       school or dates.
     2. take time to be a real friend to your children really listen
         to them.
   3. Take time to read to your children.
   4. Pray with your children
   5. Have meaningful weekly family home evenings with your
children and have them actively involved.
   6. Take time to be together at mealtimes as often as
       possible.
   7. Take time daily to ready the scriptures together as
        a family.
   8. Take time to do things as a family like picnics or other

Lesson Recap

If you heard the words Sabbath day or Sabbath day observance what words come to mind? How about this word, protection. Probably not one you think of but in D&C 59:9 it says that if we will observe the Sabbath day we will "remain unspotted from the world". We can have protection from the world and it's influences. Who doesn't want that for themselves as well as their children and grandchildren. So we need to take out Sabbath day observance both at church and at home very seriously.
In Exodus 31:13 and Ezekiel 20:20 it says the Sabbath is out sign to God and Christ. In a conference talk in April 1975 Elder Mark E. Peterson put it this way. " . . . let us ask ourselves how important the Lord's atonement is to us. How dear to us is the Lord Jesus Christ? How deeply are we concerned about immortality? Is the resurrection of vital interest to us? We can readily see that observance of the Sabbath day is an indication of the depth of out conversion. Our observance or non observance of the Sabbath is an unerring measure of our attitude toward the Lord personally and toward his suffering in Gethsemane, his death on the cross, and his resurrection from the dead. It is a sign of whether we are Christians in very deed or whether our conversion is so shallow that commemoration of his atoning sacrifice means little or nothing to us."
Sabbath day observance is a very personal thing. Ask yourself, what sign do I want to give God? Using Elder Oaks "Good, Better, Best" how can I improve my Sabbath day observance?

August Presidency Message

Dear Sisters,
In his email this past week, Jordan told of an experience he had. He wrote, “I went on exchanges with Elder Barns from Utah; he’s a brand new missionary. We had everything fall through that day. Finally we said, well let’s pray since our plan isn’t working we will ask God what His plan for us is.  We did and then we tried to go to a town and got lost for a bit and I almost said let’s just go back, but we stuck with it and then we found the town. We prayed again and the first lady we talked to, who happened to be on her porch, becomes a new investigator. That was cool to see how the Lord blessed us with His plan for us that day. We showed our diligence and He helped us come at the perfect time to find her!”
Just as Heavenly Father had a plan for Jordan and Elder Barns, He has a plan for each of us. Many times His plan is not what we have planned. We must be willing to let go of our plan and embrace His plan. Each and every morning as we kneel to pray, we can ask our Heavenly Father to direct us and help us follow His plan. Then the next step is to be open to the Spirit so when the direction comes we can know what it is He wants us to do. Sounds easy, but of course we know it is not. Yet the blessings that come when we submit to our Heavenly Father’s plan for us far outweigh what we perceive as hardship.
I have seen this in my own life. My will and desire is not always what my Heavenly Father has planned for me. I have had to set aside my desires and wishes in day to day things and also bigger things. However, I have found that if I will listen to the promptings of the Holy Ghost and unselfishly set aside my plans, I am blessed far above any perceived hardships. Sometimes the reasons and blessings are easy to see, other times it takes a long time to know why we were asked to do something, but even if you never understand, you are always blessed for being obedient.
I love each of you wonderful sisters and I know your Heavenly Father loves you and has a plan for you to help you become the best daughter of God you can become.
