Message from the Cannery

Brothers & Sisters:

Because the demand has been so overwhelming, we have added additional product to process with each of the meat products we have scheduled to run (Chicken Chunks, Beef Chunks, Beef Stew, Cream of Chicken Soup, Pork Chunks and Ground Beef).  What this means is that we have a limited amount of these products that will be available to take home with you on the day that you come to help can the meat products.

The USDA requires a mandatory 10 day incubation period for each meat products, and due to this, some of the product that has been ordered will not be available until 11 days after the scheduled run date.  The product that is available is what we ran in November of 2011.  What this means is we would like to use the November product to give to those who live  beyond 50 miles away from the cannery and the rest of the people will need to come back after the 11 day period to pick up their product.

I recognize that this will cause some inconvenience for many of you, but we have no other choice, given the amount of product that is being requested.  We will run additional product in May, which will be the last time we will be doing family canning.  We would greatly appreciate your help and consideration in regards to this matter.  I wanted to forewarn you of the challenges we are facing, although I apologize for the lateness of this notice.  We will do our best to accommodate everyone that is traveling a great distance to participate in the canning of these meat products and try to make it as painless as possible for those who live relatively close.  We appreciate the tremendous support and interest all of you have shown and expressed.

Sincerely,

Charlie Olsen

Lesson Recap

Rehle gave a great lesson from the November 2011 Ensign, p. 28, titled "Children" by Elder Neil L. Anderson.  Be sure to get out your Ensign and read this great talk.

Stake Employment Spotlight

This sptlight is on Stan Bohman, a member of the Shelley 10th ward.  Stan is an extrovert and thoroughly enjoys working with people whether in customer service, sales, or even in trucking.

Stan has worked in many different fields demonstrating adaptablity, dependablity, high levels of energy and extreme attention to needs of customers.

Stan's favorite job was working in airline ticketing and reservations.  He understood all the fare combinations and would take extra time and effort to get his customers the best airline fares.  He enjoyed much repeat business because he earnied the trust and confidence of his customers.  He worked as the sole male in his office an enjoyed the camaraderie and social dynamics of working in an office of women.  In Stan's job as a ticketing agent, he was trained and able to work a complex computer program demonstrating his ability to be trained on computer programs and systems.  Stan has taken the initiative an enjoyed the novelty of obtaining his private pilot license.  Also in the aviation industry, Stan has worked in aviation maintenance.

One of Stan's other customer service jobs included working in a Qwest call center assisting customers with modem set ups and other technical problems with internet service.  Stan's current job is working in Wal-Mart's Sporting Goods department.  He assists customers with sporting licenses, FBI background checks, invasive species permits, and assists Wal-Mart with inventory and other technical efforts.  Stan has also enjoyed working in one of only 3 fly shops in Wal-Mart.  This required specialized knowledge and special attention to customers who are passionate about fishing.

Stan enjoyed the trust and confidence working 13 years as a supervisory custodian for the Church.  He directly supervised 3 employees and had the responsibility of 3 church buildings.  He was trusted to be the director of security for a President Hinckley visit.

Stan demonstrated commiment and endurance during his 6 years of serving as a truck driver.  Truck driving is known to be populated almost exclusively by introverts and Stan is most definitely an extrovert.  The most pleasurable parts of his job were when he could interact with others at truck stops and at warehouses.  By working so long in a job not well suited to his personality, Stan showed loyalty to his company, commitment to his family, patience, flexiblity, reliablity, and ability to work under pressure.  Stan is still licensed as a commercial truck driver and has a 25,000 lb. tractor/trailer endorsement.

Stan would be an asset to any organization requiring focused attention on customers, ability to learn new technical computer skills, and needing a dedicated loyal employee who will go above and beyond expectations.  Please call Grant Durtschi, Shelley 10th ward employment specialist, 705-7200, or Stan Searle, Stake Employment Specialist, 521-6520, with any information on job opportunities.  Stan would like to thank you for listening and would appreciate any info on people that could possibly provide opportunities.

Ward Family History Goals

Our ward has set a couple of goals for family history work over the next 12 months.
1.  100,000 names undexed or arbitrated.
2.  380 family names baptized in the temple.
380 is approximately our ward membership count - Let's create a ward in Heaven!  There is work here for everyone to get involved with, and there will be lots of help coming your way.

Updates

We would like to welcome Kim Ryszka and Noralyn Dodd.  We are glad you are in our ward!

Be sure to pick up your "Daughters in My Kingdom Challenge"!  This will be a great way to get prepared for our Easter lesson and bring us closer as Sisters.

Only 2 more days to get your visiting teaching done.  Be sure to report to your supervisor.

Sister Barker is in the I.F. Care and Rehab Center across from EIRMC, room 405, 227-1245.

Happy Birthday!

Recipe Highlight - LaDawn Bolander

“Hazel’s” Cinnamon Raisin Bread
Served at Family History Fair

Mix                        7 cups flour
                                5 cups warm water
                                2 Tbs. dry yeast
                                2/3 cups oil
                                2/3 cups honey

Let sponge 10 minutes

Add                        2 Tbs. salt
                                1 heaping Tbs. Lecithin (opt.)
                                1/3 cup lemon juice

Add enough additional flour to make a soft dough.  Because the dough is soft, I roll out the dough on an oiled counter.  One of the tricks to a good bread is not to had more flour that has not been mixed in well.

Divide into four parts for large loaves or 8 parts for small loaves.  Roll dough to a rectangle shape.  Sprinkle with cinnamon sugar, fold in thirds, flatten dough and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar again.  Fold in thirds once more.  Sprinkle cinnamon in center.  Pinch sides together and place in loaf pan.  Let rise.  Bake 30 minutes and 350 degrees.  I brush the tops with shortening when I first take them out of the oven for a softer crust.

Updates

Sister Barker is in the Care Center across from the hospital.  Her phone number is 227-1245 and her room number is 405.  She would love a visit or phone call.

We would like to welcome Ilene Challis to the Relief Society Board.  She will be one of our choristers.

We would like to thank all who participated in our weekday meeting.  We learned how to make award winning cupcakes and divine oreo truffles.  The President Monson pictures turned out great and so did the quilt.  We hope to see you all there next month.

Head Poppin Cookie Correction

I tried to make the chocolate chip cookies and burnt them to a crisp at 425.  I called Carol and she has stoneware that she bakes her cookies on and they turn out great.  If you are using a metal cookie sheet like me, you'll need to reduce the heat to 375 or 350 and don't cook them as long.  Happy cooking!

Happy Birthday!

Lisa Dye - February 20th

Cannery Update

Brothers and Sisters,

Due to the overwhelming response for a number of the family canning products, we are going to squeeze an additional batch for Raspberry Jam (March 13, 2012) and Blackberry Jam (March 15, 2012).  So if you called and it was full, please call again. (We will also be canning these products in the May time frame, but for those that are interested in doing it in March, please call now.)

We have had such a big demand for Salsa (March 22, 2012) and Spaghetti Sauce (March 26, 2012), we have decided to add an afternoon shift and make more product available.  If you called and we were full and you can come in from 11:00 am to 2:30 pm for these 2 products, call in.

As a reminder we can accept phone calls on two phone numbers: 529-2201 and 529-1678.

Also, just to make everyone aware, we will also add a few extra days in May to do Chicken Chunks, Beef Chunks and Ground Beef.   I will send out the May schedule at the end of March and we will start taking names in April for the May time frame.  We are doing the best we can with the days we have to work with.  We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding.

Lesson Recap

Our Testimony of Jesus Christ

Heather Olsen gave a wonderful lesson on Sunday.  George Albert Smith loved to share his testimony.  He always tried to correct the concept that we don't believe in Christ.  Even on the day he died, he bore his testimony to his family.

Jesus Christ is the Son of God and He lives today as our resurrected Savior.

We accept the Bible's testament of the divine mission of Jesus Christ.  We have been given the Book of Mormon as an additional witness of Christ.  We have so much more knowledge than others have.

Each of us can gain a personal testimony of Jesus Christ by reading about him in the scriptures, attending Sunday School, through personal prayer, and by doing His work.

Our mission is to share with all people what we know about Jesus Christ.

1 tsp. Vanilla

From the Cannery

Brothers and Sisters,
As most of you are aware the decision has been made to close the cannery at the end of June.  In an effort to provide as much family canning that we can, we will offer a full month of family canning in March and again in May.  We will start taking names on Feb. 1st for the March schedule.  (see cannery tab at top of blog for schedule)  Please read the note on the schedule concerning the Humanitarian Canning Project that will take place in connection with the Tomato Soup family canning we will do on March 19th.  Please come and help if you can.  If you decide you can help, please call and let us know so we can put you down on the list.  This will help us in getting enough people to complete this project.

We are grateful to be able to offer these family canning products to you and are grateful for the support everyone has given the cannery over the years.  It has been a wonderful blessing.  May the Lord's choicest blessings always be yours.

Sincerely, Charlie Olsen

President's Message

To fulfill the purpose of Relief Society, the Lord has commissioned each Relief Society sister and the organization as a whole to:
1.  Increase in faith and personal righteousness.
2.  Strengthen families and homes.
3.  Serve the Lord and his children.
Early pioneer women were driven from homes and persecuted because of their faith.  Others survived fires and floods.  They crossed oceans and walked thousands of miles, tolerating dirt, illness, and near starvation to help build the Lord's kingdom on the earth.  Many of them buried husbands, children, parents, and siblings along the way.  Why did they do this?  They did it because the fire of their faith burned in their souls.  In order to fulfill the purpose of the Shelley 1st Ward Relief Society, we all need to increase the fire of our faith.  Study our scriptures, pray, attend church, and do our visiting teaching!  All these will ignite that fire, feed that fire, and we too will be able to do hard things!

Lesson Recap

Sister Bolander gave a wonderful lesson on the "Why" of the gospel.  She gave us three things to ponder:
Doctrine - equals truth (always has and will be)
Principals - what
Applications - how we do it
After defining these three things she taught us how to better use them in living the gospel.  She related how important Visiting Teaching is and how we are helping our Father in Heaven by being a great Visiting Teacher.

Weekday Meeting News

Sisters,
We are going to have a wonderful year for our Weekday meeting activities.  Our theme for the year is "Making our Hands like those from Galilee."  We have had our January activity that was absolutely wonderful, and started the year off to a great spiritual start.  You will notice that many of our activities will have something to do with your hands.  We hope that you will all take the time out of your busy lives to enjoy one evening a month as sisters in the ward.  We hope as the year goes on, that we can all evaluate our lives and see where we need to improve ever so slightly to become more like the Savior and use our hands to help others come unto Him.  Christ has no hands but ours here on the earth, let's use our hands to bless others and do as He would do.

Our Weekday meeting will be Wednesday, February 16th at 7:00 p.m.  We will be doing the President Monson pictures, there will be a quilt, and a cooking demonstration.
