Presidency Message
This time of year seems to be more hectic than any other time of the year. We as women
worry about making sure that Christmas is as perfect as we can make it for
those around us. This leads us to become very stressed. I know there have been
many years that I haven’t really enjoyed Christmas because I was too worried
about what I now think of as fluffy stuff. The Stake Relief Society Presidency sends out
a newsletter to the Ward Relief Society Presidencies each month. As I pondered
what to say this month I felt prompted to share the message Sister Peggy
Arsenault shared.
“In
a meeting with President Searle, he asked, “What do you think is the one area
that sisters in the Shelley Stake are struggling with the most?”
We
answered that we believe the sisters’ desires to serve more and give more are
larger than their physical, emotional, and financial ability to do so. The
sisters in the Shelley Stake have charitable hearts and their desire to help
others is the foundation of all the relationships in our stake. We love that
you love your sisters, but we worry that you over extend yourselves in trying
to meet all the needs and wants you see.
President
Searle listened and then gave us this directive: “Ask the sisters to
simplify one thing this season. It’s unrealistic to expect the sisters to be
able to simplify everything, but it is possible to choose one area and simplify
that one thing.”
A
few years ago, I did just that. I work with 20 people in my office. A long time
ago, someone started the tradition of giving small individual gifts to every
person plus the $5.00 gift for the Christmas Party. I had been “Grinchy” about
that requirement for 10 years. I always saw it as $25.00 burden. I needed that
money to use for my family, especially when we were so desperately trying to
live within our means and our budget rarely met the long list of family needs.
One
year I stopped; I just couldn’t do it anymore. I made a batch of ‘Rhodes’
cinnamon rolls and told everyone that was my gift. During the month, several
people stopped to thank me for “breaking the tradition”. Some had spouses that
had been laid off, some were facing medical issues and bills, others had
different reasons, but all of them were relieved to stop doing the ‘work
gifts.’ By choosing to simplify in one area, the “Grinchy” part moved out and
there was more room for the ‘Spirit of Christmas;’ and I felt it.
It
might mean fewer Christmas cards are sent or home teaching is done without the
cookie plate. Maybe it’s fewer gifts under the tree or fewer activities. Find
one area, it will be different for each of us, but it will be worth it. Dieter
F. Uchtdorf of the First Presidency in his October 2015 conference talk, Of
Things That Matter Most, stated:
“Let
us simplify our lives a little. Let us make the changes necessary to refocus
our lives on the sublime beauty of the simple, humble path of Christian
discipleship—the path that leads always toward a life of meaning, gladness, and
peace.””
I hope you have a marvelous Christmas
and can let something go, simplify that one thing so that you can more fully
feel the Christmas spirit. Take Elder Oaks words to heart and even though it is
good is it the best. Remember that Christmas is about our Savior not the fluffy
stuff.
Have a Merry Christmas. Know that I love
you and most importantly our Heavenly Father and Savior love you.

Lesson Recap
The lesson was Chapter 21: Principles of temporal and spiritual welfare President Benson said,"… The Lord will not do for us what we can and should do for ourselves. But it is his purpose to take care of his Saints. Everything that concerns the economic, social, and spiritual welfare of the human family is and ever will be the concern of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The strength of the Church welfare program lies in every family following the inspired direction of the Church leaders to be self-sustaining through adequate preparation. God intends for his Saints to so prepare themselves “that the church [as the Lord has said] may stand independent above all other creatures beneath the celestial world.” (D&C 78:14.)
"We should ask the Lord’s blessings on all our doings and should never do anything upon which we cannot ask His blessings. We should not expect the Lord to do for us what we can do for ourselves. I believe in faith and works, and that the Lord will bless more fully the man who works for what he prays for than He will the man who only prays."
As we strive to follow the prophet, we will increase our food storage and learn ways to properly store our food. There will come a time when we will need to be prepared. It might not be an end of the world situation but possibly a loss of job or financial set backs. We are asked to be prepared and to work for our means and as we do so we will be blessed and our Father in Heaven will provide for and bless us.

Lesson Recap
Sister Krishaun Player gave the lesson yesterday on knowing our purpose and having real intent. "It is important in today's world to be intentional about why we do what we do."
"Living with real intent means understanding the "why" and being aware of the motives behind our actions." "Real intent is doing the right things for the right reasons."
As we try to live with real intent and do more than just going through the motions our lives will blessed as we will learn what Heavenly Father would have us learn.

November Presidency Message
Dear
Sisters,
Can
you believe that we are approaching the end of the year? It seems like
yesterday we were celebrating the New Year and making resolutions and goals.
Time seems to be speeding up. Because time is going so fast, it is hard
sometimes to take a moment and look around at the many blessings we have. As
many of you know, going into any department store you can already buy Christmas
decorations and candy. There are commercials advertising for Christmas and our
kids are already writing their letters to Santa. Sadly, Thanksgiving gets swept
away with the other holidays.
I
love Thanksgiving! Besides the food of course, it’s a wonderful time to be with
Family and remember all our blessings. President Gordan B. Hinkley has said,
“When you walk with gratitude, you do not walk with arrogance and conceit and
egotism, you walk with a spirit of thanksgiving that is becoming to you and
will bless your lives.” This month is a good time to step back and
count our blessings and have more gratitude in our hearts.
Everyone’s
situation is different, and the details of each of our lives is unique.
However, gratitude has been the one thing that can take away bitterness or
disappointment. Gratitude is the one thing we can have that will make life more
joyful and fulfilling.
President
Dieter F. Uchtdorf said, “It might sound contrary to the wisdom of the world to
suggest that one who is burdened with sorrow should give thanks to God. But
those who set aside the bottle of bitterness and lift instead the goblet
of gratitude can find a purifying drink of healing, peace, and
understanding. As disciples of Christ, we are commanded to “thank the Lord
[our] God in all things,” to “sing unto the Lord with
thanksgiving,” and to “let [our] heart be full of thanks unto God.”
I
hope that we can all make a goal this month to take a minute to count our
blessings and remember the love that Heavenly Father has for each of us.
Love,
Krishaun Player

Lesson Recap
The lesson in Relief Society was Choose to Believe by Elder L.Whitney Clayton from the April 2015 General Conference. Elder Clayton explained," Belief and testimony and faith are not passive principles. They do not just happen to us. Belief is something we choose—we hope for it, we work for it, and we sacrifice for it. We will not accidentally come to believe in the Savior and His gospel any more than we will accidentally pray or pay tithing. We actively choose to believe, just like we choose to keep other commandments."
"Our actions are the evidence of our belief and become the substance of our faith. We are choosing to believe when we pray and when we read the scriptures. We are choosing to believe when we fast, when we keep the Sabbath day holy, and when we worship in the temple. We are choosing to believe when we are baptized and when we partake of the sacrament. We are choosing to believe when we repent and seek divine forgiveness and healing love."
May we all choose to believe and receive the blessings that are promised as we keep the commandments and receive the spiritual light that comes as we choose to believe rather than doubt.

Sister Rayanne Cook needs pictures from the different auxillaries of the activities they did during the year. She needs these as soon as possible! If you have some you can either email them to brytoysienna@gmail.com or put on a disk or jump drive for her. Thank you for your help!

Lesson Recap
Lesson # 20 - Feed My Sheep
We are all shepherd's at one time or another in our lives whether it be a church calling, or in our families, or other areas of our lives. "We must all learn to be true shepherds. We must manifest the same love to others that the Good Shepherd has for all of us. Each soul is precious to Him." To be a true shepherd we must love those whom we are to care for, for that is the only way that we can truly take care of them like the Savior wants us to. We must give personal watchcare to them. "There must be real, heartfelt concern by a true and loving shepherd, not just the shallow concern that a hireling might show." We can do this as we seek our Heavenly Father's help for he knows each of us and can help us know how to teach and reach out to those around us.

Lesson Recap- Feed My Sheep
The lesson was #20 Feed My Sheep. The purpose of the Lord's church is to further the progress of every son and daughter of God toward the ultimate blessings of eternal life. As followers of the Lord, we have the responsibility to reach out to others and help them recognize the blessings of the gospel and help them work toward the goal of eternal life. We are all shepherds. Whether as a mother, father, teacher, friend, we can lead others to the gospel of Jesus Christ. Especially of concern is bringing those who have wandered from the safety of the church back into the fold. President Benson once said,"Our prayers today must be of the same intensity and concern as were the prayers of Alma as he sought to reclaim the wandering Zoramites who had strayed from the Lord:
"Behold, O Lord, their souls are precious, many of them are our brethren; therefore, give unto us, O Lord, power and wisdom that we may bring these, our brethren, again unto thee." (Alma 31:34-35)

Sunday Lesson Recap
The lesson yesterday was Chapter 19- Leadership. President Ezra Taft Benson was a great example of leadership. He said,"If you are to provide future leadership for the Church, [your] country, and your own homes, you must stand firm in the faith, unwavering in the face of evil, and as Paul said,"Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places."(Ephesians 6:11-12)
Our young people need fewer critics and more models. You are the models to which they will look for a pattern in life to which they can follow and adhere. They will need the inspiration which can come from you as you square your lives fully with the teachings of the gospel."
We have many examples in the scriptures of leadership. These leaders were courageous, full of love, dedicated, humble, full of the Spirit, knowledgeable, and obedient to God's will. How do others see us? What kind of an example are we being in the lives of others?

Update for Oct. 17th
The Stake Relief Society Activity for all women and young women is October 17th from 6-8 pm at the Stake Center. We encourage everyone to support the Stake Relief Society in this activity which is why we are cancelling our week day meeting that was scheduled Oct.15th. Also we will not be having the Family History Ward Potluck on the 17th. It will be rescheduled for another time.
October Presidency Message
As I listened to Conference this past weekend, to me a theme
seemed to come out through the messages given. That message was we must have
faith and increase our faith if we are to survive the onslaught of Satan and
his followers. We cannot be stagnant in our faith. We must be ever growing and
coming closer to our Savior.
The early saints
had purifying fires in Kirtland and Nauvoo. Some of those who were close to the
Prophet Joseph Smith and were leaders in the Church succumbed to the call of
the world and Satan’s lies. They fell away some never to return. They gave up
the important eternal things for things here and now. We do not want to become
like those early saints who when things got hard chose the easy path and fell
away from the Church. They doubted the gospel instead of doubting their doubts.
At one time or another, we have all had the spirit testify to us that this
Gospel is true and that Christ is our Savior. If we are struggling right now,
we need to think back on that time. Think back to the witness you received when
the Holy Ghost spoke the truth to you. This gospel is true and we forget that
when we become offended by those around us. Remember the gospel is for
imperfect people to help them become more like our Savior, just because someone
who is imperfect made choices that affected you or offended you does not change
the truthfulness.
I encourage each of
you to make a self-assessment of your faith. Start from where you are at and
progress forward. Don’t compare yourself to your sister, friend, neighbor,
Bishop’s wife, or Relief Society President. We are all at different places
along the path of faith and that is ok. What matters is that we move forwards
not backwards. Now comes the work part. Elder Neil L Anderson said, “Your faith
will grow not by chance, but by choice.” Faith is belief coupled with work. We
must do the little things each day to strengthen our faith. Things like reading
our scriptures and “ponderizing” them, saying our morning and evening prayers,
attending our church meetings, partaking of the sacrament, keeping the Sabbath
day holy, attending the temple, serving others, speaking kindly, and the list
could go on and on. The gospel is simple and full of little steps that allow
each of us to move forward on the path back to our Father in Heaven.
Sisters, we and our
families must be converted to Christ and His Gospel, not the Church, if we are
going to survive this world to return to our Father in Heaven. I love each of
you and pray for you. I hope that you may find joy in your faith filled journey
through life. I know that you can do amazing things as you strive to live each
day filled with faith.

We Can Do Hard Things
If you remember the theme for this year which the Bishopric has set for the ward is "We Can Do Hard Things". They set us hikes for us to do, now they are asking us to do some family history. They would like each of us to collect information for ourselves, our parents, our grandparents and out great grandparents. We can do this together as families and as a ward family to strengthen our ties to each other and our ancestors.
Please see the picture below to see the kind of information we need to collect for each person.

Lesson Recap
The Parable of the Sower - by Dallin H. Oaks
The parable of the sower talks about the different soils on which some seeds fell. These soils represent the different ways which the teachings of the gospel are received and followed. What do we do with the Savior's teachings?
Do we let the teachings fall on Stony ground where it grows quickly but because the teachings don't have any real root they are scotched and wither away? We must beware for "if we are not rooted in the teachings of the gospel and regular in its practices, any one of us can develop a stony heart, which is stony ground for spiritual seeds."
Do we let the teachings of the gospel fall among thorns that choke it out? Do we hear the word but we let the cares and the riches of this world overpower the teachings and come first in our lives? We need "to really live what we claim to believe. That need to be a priority- not just in our personal and families lives but in our churches, our political choices, our business dealings, our treatment of the poor; in other words in everything we do."
We all struggle with the stones and the thorns but hopefully more often than not the seed/word is falling on good ground. That the teachings reach our hearts and help us change for the better as we internalize them. How can we achieve this; "by praying, by scripture reading, by serving, and by regularly partaking of the sacrament to always have His spirit to always be with us."

Women's Conference
I hope most of you got the chance to watch and listen to the General Women's Conference this past weekend. It was amazing. Sister Wixom reminded us that we are each a child of God and we have a divine nature within us. Sister Reeves reminded us that we need to beware of the tools Satan uses to destroy us.
Sister McConkie told us to continue to serve and so the Lord's work. We can do whatever the Lord asks us to do with his help. President Uchtforf told us a story of Great-Aunt Rose and how she was happy despite everything that hadn't gone the way she wanted.
If you missed it or want to view it again go to www.lds.org and click on the link there.

Lesson Recap
Lesson 18 - Beware of Pride
Most of us probably don't see ourselves as prideful but President Benson warned us that we need to be careful as pride can slip so easily into our daily lives. "The central feature of pride is enmity- enmity toward God and enmity toward our fellowmen. Enmity mean 'hatred toward, hostility to, or a state of opposition' . . . . .Pride is essentially competitive in nature. We pit our will against God's." In other wards we think what we want to do is better than what God wants us to do.
We must be careful that we do not elevate ourselves above others. If we do that we are being prideful. The world wants us to believe that we have to tear others down to raise ourselves up. However the opposite is true. If we will build others up we raise ourselves with them. We need to remember that we are all God's children doing the best we can in the circumstances we have been given.
"The antidote for pride is humility -meekness, submissiveness. It is the broken heart and contrite spirit. . . . God will have a humble people. Either we can choose to be humble or we can be compelled to be humble. Alma said, 'blessed are they who humble themselves without being compelled to be humble.' Let us choose to be humble."

Lesson Recap
Lesson # 17 - Keeping the Law of Chastity
President Benson said, "the plaguing sin of this generation is sexual immorality. This, the Prophet Joseph said, would be the source of more temptations, more buffetings, and more difficulties for the elders of Israel than any other."
Problems that relate to law of chastity are rampant today. We all know someone who is fighting sins that deal with this law or suffering the effects of others choices. Satan is attaching the family and this things to do with the law of chastity are what he is using to destroy our families.
What can we do to help ourselves and our family members combat Satan's tactics? Of course there are the Sunday school answers; prayer, scripture reading, service, and church attendance. President Benson also gives us a lists 5 main things we can do.
1. Control your thoughts. "No one steps into immorality in an instant. The first seeds of immorality are always sown in the mind."
2.Pray for the power to resist temptation. "Temptation will come to all of us. It will take many forms and appear in many disguises, but the Lord has given us the key for resisting it. . . Pray always that you may conquer Satan, and that you may escape the hands of the servants of Satan that do uphold his work."
3.Avoid improper situations. Be careful of so called harmless meetings and be careful of the time spent and words said to a member of the opposite sex who is not your spouse. "A good question to ask ourselves is this: Would my spouse be pleased is he or she knew I was doing this?"
4. Be modest. "Modesty in dress and language and deportment is a true mark of refinement. . . . Shun the low and the vulgar and the suggestive.
5. Have healthful and positive activities. Overcome good with evil. You can overcome may evil inclinations though good physical exertion and healthful activities.
If we have sinned isn't it wonderful and glorious that through the atonement we can repent and become clean again. Easy, oh no not even close to easy, but in the end it is worth it. For those of us who know others that have sinned or have been affected please remember to not judge others. It is not our place to do so. We need to love and encourage those trying to repent not judge and tear them down.

Presidency Message
I enter this position with many mixed
emotions. Of course there are feelings of nervousness, being under-qualified
and over whelmed. There is also some excitement at having new experiences and
opportunities to learn. I am honored to be working alongside such great women
in the presidency. I am also thrilled to have the opportunity to get to know
each sister in our ward better.
Most of all I am humbled to know that our Heavenly Father considers me
worthy to serve in Relief Society and serve you wonderful sisters in our ward.
For this reason, last month’s visiting teaching message really hit home for me.
One Divine Attribute of Jesus Christ is being humble. It pointed out that
"the Savior is our supreme example of the power of humility and
submissiveness." He humbly aligned his wants and desires with His Fathers
commandments by profoundly saying "Not my will, but thine, be done."
(Luke 22: 42). I pray that I will be able to follow His council in filling my
role as second counselor and put the wants and needs of the sisters above my
own.
Another great example of the Saviors humility was his great service to
all he ministered to. Again the visiting teaching message points out one of the
Savior’s many examples of humble service with the story of when he washed the
disciples feet. I know that as I learn my role and work alongside our fabulous
presidency I will have plenty of opportunities to serve our sisters and
"wash your feet" so to say. I pray that I am humble enough to take
those opportunities. The Lord expected all of us to follow His example,
"If I then, your lord and master, have washed your feet, ye also ought to
wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that ye should do as
I have done to you." (John 13:14-15). May we all follow this great example
and learn to love serving one another.

Lesson Recap
Sister Heather Olsen gave the presidency lesson this week on the importance and purpose of Relief Society. Relief Society prepares women for the blessings of eternal life by helping them increase faith and personal righteousness, strengthen families and homes, and help those in need. Relief Society accomplishes these purposes through Sunday gospel instruction, other Relief Society meeting such as thebmonthly weekday meetings, visiting teaching, and welfare and compassionate service.
Through Relief Society, we can gain friendships, learn new skills, create a support for the sisters of our ward and help each other grow closer to Christ. We can become more unified as we attend our meetings and extra weekday activities.

Lesson Recap
This week's lesson was on the talk given by Elder Kevin W, Pearson entitled Stay by the Tree. He says," Enduring to the end is a hallmark of true discipleship and is essential to eternal life...Enduring to the end requires total commitment to the Savior and to our covenants." Elder Pearson gives us six important principles that help us endure to the end:
1. Don't forget to pray- ask Heavenly Father what more would He have you do?
2. Come Unto Christ and be perfected in Him.
3. Press Forward with faith- Obedience builds faith in Christ. Faith is a principle of action and power. Consistently following the Savior's example produces spiritual power and capacity.
4. The Book of Mormon is key to spiritual survival- search the Book of Mormon and the words of the living prophets every day, every day, every day!
5. Don't be distracted and deceived!
6. Stay by the Tree-"Lehi's message is to stay by the tree. We stay because we are converted unto the Lord. True disciples...awaken unto God each day in meaningful personal prayer, earnest scripture study, personal obedience, and selfless service."
"Brothers and sisters, enduring to the end is the great test of discipleship. Our daily discipleship will determine our eternal destiny. Awaken unto God, cling to truth, keep your sacred temple covenants, and stay by the tree!

Lesson Recap
Lesson # 16 The Eldery in the Church
"The Lord knows and loves the elderly among his people. It has always been so, and upon them He has bestowed many of His greatest responsibiliteies, In various dispensations He has guided HIs people through prophets who were in thier advancing years. He has needed the wisdom and expereince of age, the inspired direction from those with long years of proven faithfulness to His gospel."
Just because someone is elderly does not mean that they have done everything and can quit or take it easy. The Lord needs the elderly and there is much they can do. President Benson gives eight areas where we can make the most of our senior years.
1. Work in the temple and attend often.
2. Collect and write family histories, sometimes you are the
only resource left available for the memeories and
information you have.
3. Become involved in missionary service. "What an example and blessing it is to a family's posterity when
grandparents serve missions. Most senior couples who
go are strengthened and revitalized by missionary service.
Through this holy avenue of service, many are sanctified
and feel the joy of bringing others to the knowledge of the
fulness of the gospel of Jesus Christ . . . ."
4. Provide leadership by building family togetherness.
5. Accept and fulfill Chruch callings.
6. Plan for your financial future. "As you move thorugh life
towards retirement and the decades which follow, we
invite all of our senior members to plan frugally for the
years following full-time employment."
7. Render Christlike service.
8.Stay physically fit, healthy, and active.

Lesson Recap
Lesson # 15 - The Sacred Callings of Fathers and Mothers
Our callings as mothers and fathers are eternal callings. Other callings come and go but those are callings from which we will never be released.
"Fathers, you have a sacred responsibility to provide spiritual leadership in your family. . . .Fatherhood is leadership, the most important kind of leadership." What are some ways you can give spiritual leadership in your homes. President Benson gave 10 ways.
1. Give Father's blessings, baptize and confirm your
children and ordain your sons to the priesthood.
2. Personally direct family prayer, family scripture reading
and weekly family home evenings
3. Attend church meetings together
4. spend one on one time with you children
5. Build traditions in your families
6.Have regular one-on-one visits with your children
7. Teach you children to work
8. Encourage good music, art and literature in your home
9. Regularly attend the temple with your wife.
10. Have your children see your joy and satisfaction in
service in the church.
Mothers are the "heart and soul of the family." "Mothers are to conceive, to bear, to nourish, to love, and to train. Spending time with your children is the greatest gift you could ever give your children. President Benson gave ten specific ways that mothers may spend effective time with their children.
1. Be at the crossroads when your children are either
coming or going such as when they come home from
school or dates.
2. take time to be a real friend to your children really listen
to them.
3. Take time to read to your children.
4. Pray with your children
5. Have meaningful weekly family home evenings with your
children and have them actively involved.
6. Take time to be together at mealtimes as often as
possible.
7. Take time daily to ready the scriptures together as
a family.
8. Take time to do things as a family like picnics or other
outings, or birthday celebrations.
9. Teach you children. Catch the little moments which
come.
