Lesson # 17 - Keeping the Law of Chastity
President Benson said, "the plaguing sin of this generation is sexual immorality. This, the Prophet Joseph said, would be the source of more temptations, more buffetings, and more difficulties for the elders of Israel than any other."
Problems that relate to law of chastity are rampant today. We all know someone who is fighting sins that deal with this law or suffering the effects of others choices. Satan is attaching the family and this things to do with the law of chastity are what he is using to destroy our families.
What can we do to help ourselves and our family members combat Satan's tactics? Of course there are the Sunday school answers; prayer, scripture reading, service, and church attendance. President Benson also gives us a lists 5 main things we can do.
1. Control your thoughts. "No one steps into immorality in an instant. The first seeds of immorality are always sown in the mind."
2.Pray for the power to resist temptation. "Temptation will come to all of us. It will take many forms and appear in many disguises, but the Lord has given us the key for resisting it. . . Pray always that you may conquer Satan, and that you may escape the hands of the servants of Satan that do uphold his work."
3.Avoid improper situations. Be careful of so called harmless meetings and be careful of the time spent and words said to a member of the opposite sex who is not your spouse. "A good question to ask ourselves is this: Would my spouse be pleased is he or she knew I was doing this?"
4. Be modest. "Modesty in dress and language and deportment is a true mark of refinement. . . . Shun the low and the vulgar and the suggestive.
5. Have healthful and positive activities. Overcome good with evil. You can overcome may evil inclinations though good physical exertion and healthful activities.
If we have sinned isn't it wonderful and glorious that through the atonement we can repent and become clean again. Easy, oh no not even close to easy, but in the end it is worth it. For those of us who know others that have sinned or have been affected please remember to not judge others. It is not our place to do so. We need to love and encourage those trying to repent not judge and tear them down.
