Lesson 18 - Beware of Pride
Most of us probably don't see ourselves as prideful but President Benson warned us that we need to be careful as pride can slip so easily into our daily lives. "The central feature of pride is enmity- enmity toward God and enmity toward our fellowmen. Enmity mean 'hatred toward, hostility to, or a state of opposition' . . . . .Pride is essentially competitive in nature. We pit our will against God's." In other wards we think what we want to do is better than what God wants us to do.
We must be careful that we do not elevate ourselves above others. If we do that we are being prideful. The world wants us to believe that we have to tear others down to raise ourselves up. However the opposite is true. If we will build others up we raise ourselves with them. We need to remember that we are all God's children doing the best we can in the circumstances we have been given.
"The antidote for pride is humility -meekness, submissiveness. It is the broken heart and contrite spirit. . . . God will have a humble people. Either we can choose to be humble or we can be compelled to be humble. Alma said, 'blessed are they who humble themselves without being compelled to be humble.' Let us choose to be humble."
