When
Brian and I lived in 2nd Ward and only had the three boys, our ward
challenged everyone to get their 72 hour kits together. I admit, I felt very overwhelmed and thought
there is no way I can do that or even afford it. Even though I felt we were
facing an overwhelming project, Brian and I decided to do as much as we could.
The ward had given us lists with ideas on them. One night, for Family Home
Evening, we began. We used backpacks to hold the items and started going down
the list and piling things on each person’s backpack. The boys thought it was
great fun, almost like a scavenger hunt, as we would try to find the next item
listed. It amazed me how many things we actually already had that were on the
list and all we needed to do was gather the items up and put them in the
backpacks. Yes, there were things that we didn’t have, but we made a list and
over time bought the needed items. Every year, usually one of the kids, will
say let’s go through our 72 hour kits for Family Home Evening. If you don’t have 72 hour kits for your
family try and put together at least something by gathering items from your
house. If you already have one, go through
it. Food needs rotated as well as clothing sizes change. Hopefully, we never need to use them but we
will be so much better off if we have them when we need them. If you need an
idea of what to put in your kits, Google “72 hour kit check list.” There is a
wealth of information out there.
