Document valuables
Photograph or videotape the contents of your home, especially items of higher value. Compile a room-by-room list of the belongings. The IRS has a disaster loss workbook, Publication 584, available on their website (www.irs.gov) to help with the documentation.
Recently a family in our ward was robbed. Because they had no proof of things that were taken, the insurance won't cover a large portion of it. They lost thousands of dollars. They are telling everyone to videotape all of their belongings.
